Do You Have What It Takes? Jamaica has recruited and trained some of the fastest pushers in the sport of bobsleigh. Above, Lascelles Brown (L) and Winston Watt (R) after winning the 2-man push at the World Push Championships in 2002. The Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation is always looking for new talent to continue its tradition of excellence in the sport of bobsleigh. To be an outstanding bobsleigh athlete one will need exceptional speed strength capabilities. These capabilities are initially tested in the following events: - 30 meter sprint
- 60 meter sprint
- Standing long jump
- Sled push
If an athlete also wishes to become a bobsleigh driver, then he or she will also need excellent eye/hand coordination, tremendous focus, mental agility and mental toughness.
If an athlete does well in the test events then he or she has the potential to be part of this team. The real test though is on the ice where the athlete must train and compete in very difficult circumstances: cold, manual work to prepare and handle the sled, long hours, and bruising rides and crashes.
The final test is the individual's ability to be part of a team both on and off the ice. The ability to get along with others, pull your own weight (literally and figuratively), motivate and encourage others are critical traits to being part of a team that must live together for extended periods of time during training camp and the competitive season, and that must gel as a unit and entrust the physical safety of each to the other.
Those who make it through the selection regimen, on-ice training and are proven team players, will earn the right to be a part of one of the most prestigious teams in the history of sport, and have the honour of wearing the national colours of Jamaica in competition where they are expected to continue the nation's fine tradition of exceptional performance in sport on the world scene.
Group Selection events are held annually during the second week of August at the GC Foster College For Sport and Physical Fitness. Individuals with a proven background in sport may request a selection test.
